Britz explained that Van Hemert sought to connect the world through natural elements using universally recognisable symbols that immediately evoke emotion. “In a body of 24 works created specifically for this exhibition at [the] gallery, Van Hemert uses sunflowers as a metaphor for hope and anticipation. [He] has created a substantial body of work, both paintings and drawings, addressing themes concerning the principles of life [which are] birth, life [and] death.”

He added that the artist’s expressive use of colour and gesture characterised his paintings. “[His works] captivate, forcing an emotional response.”

Van Hemert will be present on the opening night and art enthusiasts are invited to meet and speak with him.
