UPDATE: Two shot at on Grayston Drive

SANDTON - An eyewitness saw shots fired on Grayston Drive in one of the two shooting incidents on the road on 5 August.

UPDATE: 8 August, 12.30pm:

As reported, the incidents took place on the road within five minutes of each other.

The first case saw a shot fired at the windscreen on the driver’s side of the vehicle and the victim fled the scene. A photo of the bullet hole through the windscreen was tweeted by the victim’s family member.

In the second incident, Sandton police reported four men approached a car on Grayston Drive in an attempt to hijack the vehicle. This is the incident which the eyewitness who called Sandton Chronicle saw. She wished to remain anonymous in order to protect her identity.

The eyewitness claims she saw suspects surround a black BMW vehicle and the passenger alight from the vehicle. She saw one suspect holding a gun and she heard two shots fired. She added that one of these shots was fired at the car that the men were attempting to hijack.

She also believed the shots were warning shots.

The eyewitness raised concern and suspicion that during the incident and despite shots fired, the window washers on the road did not look perturbed at the incident.

She said she fled the scene to safety and alerted police to the incident.

She said she was aware of the reports of other incidents on Grayston Drive recently and believed a strong police presence was needed on the road.

Police shootout on Grayston Drive

6 August, 11.30am:

Motorists are urged to take caution after two motorists were shot at on Grayston Drive on 5 August.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson of the Sandton police, the two incidents took place about five minutes apart from each other.

“The first incident took place just after 3pm as the victim was about to off-ramp [exit] off Grayston Drive, when two men wearing balaclavas approached his car,” she said.

One of the men fired a shot at the driver’s window, at which point the victim accelerated and drove off.

No injuries were reported according to Cloete and a case of attempted murder was opened at the police station.

In the second incident, a victim was approached by four men on Grayston Drive and had his passenger door shot at.

“The men took the victim’s car keys and a case before making off,” she said.

Cloete said a case of attempted hijacking was opened and the police were still investigating both incidents.
