Parents livid with Bryandale Primary School

BRYANSTON - Bryandale Primary School took action against parents who broke traffic laws when dropping off their children at the school.

The drop-off zone on Cumberland Avenue allows parents to drop off their children on the left-hand side of the road. However, some of the parents park their vehicles at the drop-off zone and walk their children inside the school.

Ward 104 councillor, Mike Wood said this caused traffic congestion and it limited the space available for other parents. “Then parents are forced to stop and park in the middle of the road or on the wrong side of the road,” added Wood.

Wood said the school approached him and the Metro police about the issue. He said, “Parents have been informed about dangers of breaking the law, they were warned and now they are facing the consequences.”

The Metro police issued a total of 15 tickets to parents.

One parent, Lara Nothnagel said, “There is just not enough parking. What must I do when there is no parking available? Must I drive around the block five times until I find a parking?” she asked.

The school has extra parking available on the other side of the main gate, but Nothnagel said there was no parking available.

Nothnagel alleged that she was harassed by one of the Metro police officers while trying to drop off her children.

“I was at the drop-off zone and the officer just gave me a ticket. He was rude. My girls were sobbing their eyes out because they were watching the officer argue with me.”

Another parent, Karen Howell said the Metro police officer told her the ticket fine was for R500 when it was for R250. “There is not even an amount written on this ticket.” Howell was issued with two tickets while she was parked at the drop-off zone.

Spokesperson for the Metro police, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said if a motorist felt that a ticket was issued incorrectly, the complainant could apply for the ticket to be cancelled with the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences or the Road Traffic Management Corporation.
