Man shot and killed in possible hijacking in Rivonia

RIVONIA - A man has been shot and killed in what police are calling an "incident" on Wessels Road in Rivonia.

UPDATE: June 6, 3pm

Our reporter, Andrei van Wyk, has spoken with a delivery man from Sandwich Baron who witnessed the incident.

“I was driving behind the victims car, a Toyota. A Mazda bakkie pulled up in front of us. Two men jumped from the back of the bakkie, one of them had a gun,” said the eye witness who didn’t want to be named.

“They opened the victim’s doors and were searching around in the car. After that they shot him.”

According to the witness they didn’t take anything except an iPad.

The victim is alleged to have been a Zimbabwean national and it is thought that he was followed from a bank before the shooting occurred.

UPDATE: June 6, 2.15pm:

According to those on the scene, although it is unclear why the man was shot, it is possible that he was hijacked for money.

Our reporter has learned that he worked as a driver in the area and it is reported that he drove to the bank for the company he works for.

Captain Kym Cloete of the Sandton police the motive for the shooting still needs confirmation. She confirmed that the incident occurred just after noon. They have just finished processing the body and the mortuary van is on the way to the scene.

“We have taken statements from a number of witnesses. We also have security footage from the surrounding area,”said Cloete.

June 6, 1.45pm:

Wessels Road was closed between 11th and 12th Avenues while police where on the scene.

According to reports it is unclear why the man was killed as nothing was stolen from his vehicle. The police are currently looking for three suspects.

A Sandton Chronicle BBM contact, whose child attend Rivonia Primary School stated that parents were alerted by the school and asked to fetch their children immediately. “It was very scary. Rivonia Primary was excellent in the situation. Many thanks to the school.”

It is unclear if any pupils at the school heard or saw the incident.
