Meeting points for Spruit Day 2014
JOBURG - On June 7, the Joburg North community will take positive environmental action by taking part in the biggest the Braamfontein Spruit clean-up.
During an interview with the Gazette earlier this year, one of the main organisers of the clean-up, Natalie Zimmelman said the initiative was planned to happen days after World Environment Day which is on 5 June.
Local communities, including Parkhurst, Parktown North, Craigpark, Parkmore and Delta Park will actively get involved with cleaning up the Spruit which runs through these areas.
Residents will not only have the opportunity to make a difference to their environment but will also have a hand in raising environmental awareness among their neighbours.
Zimmelman emphasised how important it was for residents to realise that conserving the environment was not just the responsibility of the city, and the clean-up is meant to encourage more people to commit themselves to maintaining their part of the Spruit.
The campaign is a partnership between concerned citizens, the City of Joburg, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Pikitup, local Residents’ Associations, various interest groups and youth representatives such as Cubs and Scouts.
Spruit Day 2014, as it has been dubbed, is also being supported by Miss Earth South Africa and Greenpeace Africa, with sponsorship from ADT, ER24 and Imperial Green Motion.
All residents, businesses, cycling clubs, walking and running clubs and schools are welcome and encouraged to get involved by helping to clean up.
Clean-up activities will start at 7am on Saturday morning along a 25km stretch of the Spruit and will carry on until approximately 3pm in the afternoon.
Meeting points have been arranged by each Residents’ Association in areas along the course of the Spruit, where instructions and equipment such as refuse bags will be provided.
Pikitup and the City of Joburg will be on hand to remove the collected refuse and litter.
