Fashion master class highlights the history of Italian fashion
SANDTON – A professor from New York spoke about everything Italian fashion at Sandton Sun Hotel.

Sandton City has partnered with 70 Years of Italian Genius in the City, a retrospective installation where the Italian contribution in the history of fashion is showcased.
A history lecture was conducted by Professor Eugenia Paulicelli from Queens College and The Graduate Center of the City University of New York on 4 March.

Prof. Paulicelli left many inspired and educated. She highlighted the brief history of each designer behind each high fashion brand like Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Versace, Prada, Dolce and Gabbana, BVLGARI, Ferragamo and Billionaire Italian Couture.

(Legnano-MI 1994–Milan 2007) Ferre graduated with a degree in architecture from Milan Polytechnic. It is no coincidence that he is called ‘the architect of fashion’ in the industry, not simply because of his background but also for his extravagant sartorial constructions. He made his debut in fashion designing bijoux and accessories and his work appeared in important fashion magazines in 1971. Photo: Itumeleng Komana
She said that it was important to know the history of Italian fashion and how these designers made it in the fashion industry, “They got out of their comfort zones and looked for unconventional spaces to create.

“Italian fashion is big today all over the world because they take risks and collaborate with other designers from all over the world.”
This unique collaboration is an opportunity for Sandton City’s patrons and guests visiting the Diamond Walk to indulge in the history and nostalgia of the pieces, as well as view the current collections in stores.

Gianni Versace was born in Reggio Calabria in 1946. His autonomous career began in Milan in 1972 when he designed a collection for Florentine Flowers which was an instant hit. With the help of his brother, they turned the brand Gianni Versace into a household name and global brand from just a freelancer. Over the span of twenty years, Versace has dressed international celebrities like Madonna, Lady Diana, Jennifer Lopez and many others. Photo: Itumeleng Komana

He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He started his artistic career as a painter and was patronised by Kenny Guggenheim who organised his first solo exhibition in 1944. During the 60s and 70s, he became one of the most original and unpredictable figures in Italian and international fashion. He is considered the ‘fashion gardener’ because of his bold use of colour and pattern. Photo: Itumeleng Komana

Leading up to SA Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019, hosted on the Sandton City Rooftop from the 3 to 6 April, attendees are encouraged to participate in learning about Italian fashion brands.
