Stay safe this holiday

SANDTON – Before hitting the road for the holidays, a local residents' association shares a few tips with the public.

While the festive season is a time of much joy, relaxation and celebration, it is also a time when criminals take advantage of the fact that most residents have left their homes unoccupied while they set off on holiday.

Karen Soderholm, committee member for the Bryanston River Club Community Forum said, “People need to safeguard their homes at this time of year when criminals do their Christmas shopping.”

Make sure that your household is armed, your electric fences are working and a neighbour is keeping an eye on your property if you are going away.

Chairperson of the Kelvin Residents’ Association, Luewellyn Pillay urged all Sandton residents to do the following before setting off on holiday:

  • Do not drink and drive
  • Do not advertise your absence on social media. Post your vacation pictures when you are back home
  • Inform a friend or neighbour to monitor your property
  • Arrange day and night lighting scheme before leaving on vacation, so it appears someone is home
  • Ensure you have signed up with a security partner for prompt response to any emergency situations
  • Get to know your neighbours and your street captains. They can assist you quicker than anyone else
  • Drive safe.
