Golden oldies for a good cause
HURLINGHAM – The Bats invite the public to support their upcoming concert at the Rosebank Union Church on 27 October in support of motor neuron disease patient Bob Fuller.
The Bats are hosting an entertaining musical comedy concert at the Rosebank Union Church on 27 October, where all proceeds will be donated to assist motor neuron disease patient Bob Fuller.
The Bats Bob Fuller Benefit was proposed when drummer Eddie Eckstein became aware of the financial burden Fuller’s family was experiencing 11 years after he was diagnosed with the disease.
Eckstein’s niece Nicky Fuller is Bob’s wife and they have been walking through the troubling journey with motor neuron disease for a long period of time together.

Bob started using a wheelchair 11 years ago and began requiring full-time care nine years ago, as 95% of his muscles have given in. When he was diagnosed with the disease in 2006, he was only given three to five years to live and did not expect it to come with such a hefty financial burden.
Bob moved from the USA to South Africa in 1988 to lead Youth Harvest through Youth for Christ. He and Nicky live in Bedfordview and Bob works as head of student affairs at The King’s School in Linbro Park, Sandton.
“Bob and I chose to trust in God through this situation and we have been blessed with an incredible support structure through family and the school. The financial benefit of this concert will be a great help to us, but it will also mean a lot for Bob to see the support of the people on the night. It is great to see that people care and that he hasn’t been forgotten in this journey and struggle. Bob always keeps a smile on his face despite the hardship,” said Nicky.
Eckstein said that The Bats volunteered to do the concert to assist Bob, whose company they all enjoy. They will be playing some of their classic hits including A Shabby Little Hut as well as entertaining audiences with some tongue-in-cheek humour.

The Bats are known across South Africa for their musical comedy shows that began in 1964.
“People expect a group of fuddy-duddies, but are always surprised by the energy in the band. We believe we are doing this for a good cause and people should come and support if they enjoy a feel-good variety show that helps you forget your troubles and come out smiling,” said Eckstein.
Details: Tickets for the show can be booked through Nicky Fuller and cost R120 each. You can contact Nicky on 072 362 7491 or email bnfuller@mweb.co.za to make bookings. The show will begin at 8pm on 27 October at Rosebank Union Church.
