Music by the river

RIVONIA – Nestled on the banks of the Braamfontein Spruit that runs through Rivonia, is a hub of live entertainment – the Africlassic River Theatre.

Every month, the theatre hosts the Africlassic Moonlight Serenade, where guests dine on delicious food, soak in the spectacular view and are entertained by the very best in live Afrikaans music.

“Our focus is to create a relaxing atmosphere with different people coming together for a night out and appreciate South African talent while enjoying a three-course dinner,” said Mariska Dreyer, branding and events executive at the Africlassic River Lodge.

Artists such as Liza Bronner, Bobby Angel, Vaughan Gardiner, Andriette Norman and Rocco de Villiers have all performed for the guests attending the serenade and next month’s treat will be none other than Chris Chameleon.

Chameleon had nothing but praise about the hospitality and the venue. “It is a most unusual venue in an unusual setting, not at all what one would expect from Rivonia if you only knew the suburb from, say, the Internet,” he said. The musician added that considering Joburg’s size, it was surprisingly underrepresented regarding live music venues. “Africlassic is an appreciated landmark in the Johannesburg cultural scene,”

Chameleon has just completed recording his new album which is his first English album in years. “I had been feeling the urge to express myself in English. I am hugely sensitive to the effect that language has on my personality and the way I express myself.” He also revealed that he will be performing this album “almost in its entirety” as well as a few old Afrikaans favourites, during his evening at the Africlassic Moonlight Serenade.

Catch Chris Chameleon at the Africlassic River Theatre on 9 April.

Tickets cost R350 per person and are available on Computicket.
