City sheds become newest neighbourhood market
JOBURG - The Sheds@1Fox is Jozi's latest neighbourhood market, and the brainchild of inner-city ambassador, Gerald Garner.

“I visited the site for the first time with the property owner, the Johannesburg Land Company. I happen to lease my office for my JoburgPlaces business from them, and they then showed me some of the other properties they own in town. I immediately realised the warehouses at 1 Fox had incredible historic value and so much potential for refurbishment. It was just perfect for a food market.”
Garner is renowned for his JoburgPlaces book, and his tours of the City of Gold.
A lot of the excitement for the market is because it’s part of the inner city, which, according to Garner, has the energy and exuberance of a new generation that is embracing an urban lifestyle and regenerating the city.
“We are hoping that the market will become permanent next year. This year it is only trading from Thursday to Sunday every week from October to December,” Garner added.
The Sheds@1Fox will open with an urban picnic event on 2 October as part of the Absa Joburg City Festival, and Garner is also excited on what will be on offer.
“We have a great variety of prepared foods, produce, fabrics and gifts. I am particularly excited about a chilli relish product sourced from the Winterveld north of Pretoria. We are keen to promote local, South African-made goods and produce. One thing is for sure, The Sheds@1Fox will be a foodie’s delight,” he said.
Potentially, he hopes it could turn into a neighbourhood market.
