Joburg Ballet brings performance to the people

JOBURG Ballet performed a flash mob version of The Nutcracker at the Sandton Gautrain Station on 13 November.

The performance was part of a campaign between Gautrain and Joburg Ballet to promote the arts and the utilisation of the Gautrain over weekends.

According to CEO of Joburg Ballet, Dirk Badenhorst, he was inspired by a similar event held by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, who played in the New York Subway.

“We approached Gautrain to bring Joburg’s world-class African ballet company, [along] with our world-class train system, to bring live performance to the people,” explained Badenhorst.

“These exciting activations create awareness and boost the popularity of ballet and the performing arts,” he added.

An intimate group of ballet dancers engaged in different pieces of The Nutcracker with a Gautrain audience on the way to Hatfield, and performed again at Hatfield Station.

The Nutcracker runs from 23 November to 1 December at the State Theatre in Pretoria and has a dedicated return shuttle bus between the theatre and the Pretoria Gautrain Station.

Only available for Saturday and Sunday performances, Gautrain has ensured the train services are not limited to business commuters, but suitable for family use too.
