Get children active and healthy this July
SANDTON – A new educational sports programme to be introduced to Sandton this July.
Teddy Sport, a curriculum-based sports education programme that inspires children to get active and participate in sport, will be introduced at some of the popular community venues from this month.
Teddy Tennis first started in the United Kingdom in its current format in 2006 by Richard and Stephen Bean. Last year, it had expanded to 21 countries and can now be played in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Africa. It is not only the footprint that keeps expanding but is being continually developed and now includes tennis, cricket and soccer, with additional activities being tried and tested.
Karen Losch, the head coach and franchise owner of Teddy Tennis Sandton, said that the programme is currently running at some nursery schools but will be opening at the Rivonia Community Hall, Field and Study Centre in Parkmore and the Ernest Ullman Park in Morningside from July. It caters for children between the ages of two and a half to six years old. “It works by combining music, pictures and teddy bear characters into a totally interactive learning adventure that young children enjoy,” said Losch.
“It is also taught using the Visual Auditory Kinesthetic (VAK) accelerated learning system, ‘they see it, they hear it and they do it’. This promotes accelerated learning, and ensures the kids stay engaged and have fun while learning.”
The biggest benefit of Teddy Sport is that it gives children confidence by helping them successfully learn the basic skills needed for ball sports. It also has many other educational benefits including teaching the concept of sportsmanship and fair play, it establishes the basis for a healthy lifestyle for children by making exercise fun and interactive and settling the groundwork of a healthy active life. It aids in building communication skills and teamwork and it enhances coordination.

“Teddy Sport activities run on weekly lessons of 30–45 minutes per lesson, with lessons ideally catering for four to eight children per session,” Losch explained.
“The focus of each lesson is on the three key skills required to play ball sport like movement skills, ball skills, having the ability to have hand-eye coordination and racket or bat skills.”
Teddy Sport offers weekly cricket and tennis lessons, sports sessions for play dates, holiday clinics and birthday parties. To find out more about Teddy Sport in Sandton or to offer it at your school or facility, contact Karen Losch karen@teddytennis.com; 083 325 1169.
