This is a 1 to 18, not a 9 to 5 job

PARKVIEW – This pretty perfect professional golfer plies her trade at Parkview Golf Club.

“Do you like my office?” asked professional golfer, Tandi Mc Callum gesturing to the open greens with tall pine trees surrounding a picturesque dam with a fountain, iconic of the Parkview Golf Course.

“It’s so beautiful,” she continued. “The only downside is I spend a fortune on sunblock.”

The course-record holder (a 9-under 63) and SA Open winner was wearing the colours of her office, with golf club in hand and a smile on her face, ready for another day at work.

The 31-year-old Woodmead resident has only played golf for 16 years, but the last 11 have been professionally. In-between tournaments, Mc Callum also makes a living coaching golf at Parkview.

“Golfing is fun because I get to spend five hours outside each day doing what I love with my friends.” She said the sport provided a constant challenge to “dig deep and improve”.

“Golf is a reflection on life. If you are in a good head space, it comes out on the course. Each shot and day is different, and you have to be the best you can be mentally, physically, emotionally, technically and spiritually.”

Apart from winning the SA Open in 2009, Mc Callum’s other claims to fame include winning the Felix Finnish Open in Finland in 2009, the Sun International Ladies Open in 2013 and the inaugural The Sun PinkStig Series last year. She also qualified for the British Open in 2012.

“I would say my best memory was winning the SA Open at Parkview, where I also set the course record. I was playing with Kim Brookes and Michelle Leigh and we had such a good time telling jokes and having fun, I did not even know I was doing well until the end. Now when I play I try to recall the positive feelings I had then.”
