Wanderers host top national snooker competition

ILLOVO – The Wanderers Club hosted the cream of the crop of snooker competitors for the SA Classic Snooker Championships in September.

The Wanderers Club hosted the SA Classics Snooker Championships in September, bringing together the cream of the crop of players ranked highly on a national level.

The competition is one of only two ranking events on the national calendar and is open to all affiliated players. The championship welcomed 64 entries in the singles competition and 30 teams entered in the pairs category.

Wanderers snooker section club captain and Central Gauteng Snooker Tournament director, Hugo Lotriet said, “Competition in both events was very strong, as these are mostly players that are very high on the national ranking list. The cream of the crop, so to speak. We saw some unbelievable potting skills and remarkable tactical play.”

Lotriet said the players who performed with the most consistency and strongest potting ability emerged victorious in the championships.

Finalists of the championships were Richard Halliday from Gauteng North (Pretoria) and Faaris Khan of the Western Province, with Khan emerging as the champion. The SA pairs saw Kiashan and Latchman Moodley from Gauteng North play Ryan George and Rafique Limbada from Central Gauteng (The Wanderers), with the Moodley team as ultimate winners.

“Both finalists in the SA Classic are prolific potters and it went down to a final frame decider because there was so little to separate them. In the pairs, it is the combination of skill and also knowing your partner and his strengths on the table. The final score there was 6–4.”

Latchman and Kiashan Moodley won the SA Classics Snooker Pairs Championships at The Wanderers Club in Illovo.

Wanderers has hosted the competition for the past two years and the next two years will be hosted in Port Elizabeth.
