Inaugural Samsung Galaxy Cup a grand success

SANDTON – Pupils with special needs were treated to a fun and sporty day at Sandton Sports Club.

The sports day, hosted on 26 November by electronics giant Samsung, saw four schools from the South African Learners with Special Educational Needs Mild to Moderately Handicapped Schools Football Association take part in a series of soccer matches. The schools also received a generous donation of soccer kits from the company.

Present at the event was Abey Tau, Samsung Africa Regional Headquarters corporate citizenship manager, who explained the hosting of the event.

“We partnered with LSEN to bring some of their schools here today for a day of soccer and to handover soccer kits for their soccer teams,” he said.

“We chose the partnership through soccer because it brings people together and quite popular across the board.”

Tau added that the event included a special visit from Poland, the winners of the 2015 Samsung Galaxy Cup. He explained that they had come in to provide training sessions and share their skills with the pupils.

Sung Woo Han, vice president and managing director of Samsung Electronics Southern Africa, expressed excitement at the upcoming festivities.

“Samsung’s mission of positively impacting the lives of others is brought to life by initiatives such as this. Not only do we hope to help others through our technology, we also take our active participation in the social development of the communities we serve,” he said.

Mpho Maseko, national deputy chairperson of the LSEN MMH Schools, expressed happiness at the donation made by Samsung, and urged them to continue assisting the school beyond sports.

“We know this partnership will go a long way in developing soccer, but we urge Samsung to enhance these pupils’ academic careers and not just contribute sports-wise” he said.

The SA LSEN Schools of Football Association’s vision is to develop intellectually-challenged pupils through sports in a respectful and responsible way. All of its pupils fall into a unique category and are nurtured and encouraged to participate in the football sports code.
