The eagle has landed

BRYANSTON – Following an impressive showing recently in Europe, golfer Kaleigh Telfer returned to continue her impressive streak in a championship in George.

The Bryanston resident managed to carve out a 10-stroke victory in the Southern Cape Championship at the George Golf Club where she opened with a six-under 66. The 17-year-old then stretched her lead to seven strokes with a second round 67, which included a career-first albatross at the par-five second, and closed with a 70 to seal her second provincial triumph this season on a winning total of 13-under par 203.

This victory earned Telfer second position in the Women’s Golf South Africa senior rankings.

She elaborated on how her experience competing in the Annika Invitation Europe in Sweden, and the Girl’s British Open Amateur Championship helped prepare her for the championship in George.

“The standard of the players who competed in [both competitions] was incredibly high,” Telfer said.

“You really had to step up your game to have any chance, and I was still competing against them in my head when I teed off in George. It is going to sound really weird when I say this, but my mindset was still in Europe.”

The Swedish tournament saw Telfer finish in 37th position, while she tied in fourth place in the 36-hole stroke play qualifier to reach the match play stage of the British amateur championship.

The young sports star said she and fellow player Ivanna Samu gained valuable experience by playing in the overseas events.

“We had to think out of the box to succeed and find reserves we didn’t even know we had. We are both greatly indebted to Women’s Golf South Africa for giving us the opportunity to compete in these world-class events,” she said.
