Bryanston and Rosebank canoeists race hard

SANDTON - The Victoria Lake Canoe Club hosted an exciting 40km VLC Chili Bite River Race on 14 June with Pier Cruickshanks and Alex Roberts from Rosebank and Sandton impressing.

The event enabled novices, or less fit paddlers, to enjoy their early races within comfortable manageable distances. It was also the perfect long training race for those preparing for the Berg River Marathon in July.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng Canoe Union, Jennie Dallas said, “The race started in Daleside on the Klip River and finished in Three Rivers, just before the junction with the Suikerbos, and the Vaal rivers.”

Rosebank English teacher Cruickshanks and Bryanston resident Roberts raced furiously, with Cruickshanks beating Roberts by two seconds, although both were beaten by Sowetan U23 paddler Siseko Ntondini.

Cruickshanks finished first in the sub veteran age category and Roberts finished first in the senior age category.
