Sandton soccer stars shine in Spain

SANDOWN - Sandton Park Football Club were very proud of their under 14 stars who took part in the Valencia Cup Easter Tournament.

Hosted in the third largest city in Spain at the training ground of top Spanish soccer club Valencia F.C, the tournament took place from 3 to 5 April.

Sandton Park Football Club under 14 players were one of eight teams; the others from England and Spain. The young team performed exceptionally well, and placed second after a tense final against local club Colegio Salgui, which won 1-0.

But with their second place medals, team member Tumi Sekhampu was awarded Player of the Tournament for the under 14 boys category

Chairman of the Sandton Park Footbal Club, Marco Marpat, said though they did not meet any professional players, they got to see some of their heroes in action in a match at Mestalla Stadium between Valencia F.C and Villa Real, which he described as an amazing experience which truly inspired his players.

Marpat added that the entire experience was important to the players as it exposed them to the international level of soccer, and because playing against teams from other countries gave them insight into the different pressures and styles of play, which broadened their knowledge of the game.

“Reaching the final and our player winning player of the tournament was an exceptional achievement for a South African junior Football Club,” concluded Marpat.
