Marathon kicks off in Sandton – with a glitch or two

SANDTON - The Sandton to Soweto Marathon kicked off at Innesfree Park in Sandton on 10 August.

The 42km-race was met with mixed reactions. This after the race was scheduled to start at 6am but only commenced at 6.30am.

People took to the marathon’s Facebook page Thuli Ngcobo wrote, “To delay a race with 30minutes, that’s not good at all.”

Tebogo Desiree Kobe added, “I am so disappointed this race was a disaster, it started 30 min late.”

However, on the morning of the race there was an energy of high spirits. A big group of over 500 runners gathered at Innesfree Park accompanied by Metro police and emergency services.

Caroline Lee wrote, “Besides the late start, I didn’t encounter problems. I thought the marshalling was great and although one or two water tables didn’t have water, the rest was ok. There was enough Coke throughout. Love the route.”

Even after the race had commenced, late runners arrived after 6.30am and joined the rest of the group on Katherine Street.

Participants of the race also complained about the organisation of the race.

Lebo Lengoasa wrote, “The race was badly organized. No toilets, no marking for 21km n 2 make it worse… Didn’t get a t-shirt after waiting an hour… I’m soo disappointed!!!”

Danielle Bates added, “I ran the 21km race and really enjoyed the route. What really p***** me off was queuing for my tshirt for over an HOUR to be told they ran out.”

Seitshiro Blackstar wrote, “Organising a Race is a tall order I hope some of the problems encountered by runners will be addressed for the next one to make it better.”

The race ended at the Soweto Rugby Field.
