Tennis player is in it to win it

SANDTON - Sandton Sports Club tennis player Richard Thongoana (14) has been invited to participate in the Nike Junior International Tennis Championships in Florida, USA.

The championships are a prestigious sporting event that showcase talent from around the globe, and he was asked to play in the tournament after winning the South African Nike junior

championships.

This is the first time Thongoana will play in a competitive tennis tournament away from home.

He is hoping to be picked up by a sponsor in Florida: that could help further his career, as the sponsor would be responsible for all his travel costs as well as manage his training.

Thongoana trains every day for two hours at the Intensity Tennis Centre with head coaches Vusa Majola and Ndu Ncube, who run the centre.

Majola said Thongoana achieved these positive results through hard work, and he plans to work harder at the tournament in Florida.

“Tennis is a mentally tough sport. If you are having a bad day, there is no team to support you; it is just you and your mood,” said Thongoana.

Thongoana enjoys how disciplined the game is, and is working towards the “amazing rewards” it offers.

He added that he has been fortunate enough to receive support from his school St Stithians, as well as his parents and coaches.
