Young canoeist shines

Nicholas Faure, who lives in River Club, has been paddling with his canoeist father for some months at Emmarentia Dam, and entered his first canoe race, hosted by Pretoria Canoe Club, on 4 August at the massive Roodeplaat Dam.

The Gauteng School League races are hosted on a monthly basis throughout the year at various clubs and dams throughout the area to encourage competitive racing in young canoeists from under eight to 18 years.

Points are earned on a sliding scale for all finishers of the age appropriate races, and credited to the schools and clubs represented by the paddling racer.

Faure raced 2km, finishing in a time of 18 minutes and 53 seconds, as the fifth U8 finisher, although still only six years old.
