As a resident of Parkmore who lives close to George Lea Park, I object most strenuously to the hosting of live music festivals at this venue.
Kaya FM hosted a jazz festival recently and what jazz it turned out to be. There was Michael Jackson and RnB music going on until 9pm. It stopped around this time because several residents had complained to Metro police.
I know this because I myself phoned them twice and they admitted that people had been phoning in. I eventually phoned the Sandton police. I do not take sole credit for ending this nonsense, but I think if some of us had not been persistent, the music could have gone on until much later.
Who gives permission for this? I think the Parkmore Community Association must take up this issue with the City of Johannesburg. Loud music is invasive. It does not respect the sick or the bereaved. It is a disease that has spread widely in this country. Noise is a health issue, but the minister of health is far too busy hounding smokers to extinction instead of addressing this issue of noise in our towns and cities.
There are several stadiums in the City of Johannesburg. Why does the City of Johannesburg not authorise the use of these places to host music festivals instead of a residential area such as Parkmore? We pay a lot of money to live in this suburb.
