The follow-up to the 2013 film, The Purge, does more than just depict a barbaric 12-hour killing spree holiday, it also shows up the ruling elite, and the extent of social inequality in America.
After the government authorises an annual 12-hour holiday in which all criminal activity is deemed legal, it becomes apparent that the government might have devised this holiday to purge the country of the poor and the sick.
Interestingly, in the film the director uses blacks and Latinos as the poor and the sick who are meant to be purged from American society.
DeMonaco brings social awareness to the existence of a class system in America, oppression, the decay of humanity and people’s obsession to survive at the expense of others.
The government is depicted as the enemy of society which plays the rich against the poor by claiming to fight crime by allowing citizens to regulate themselves without punishment for one night.
It is a sick and bloody thriller which chronicles the survival of a group of individuals whose paths happen to cross on the deadly day.
Audiences are hauled into two hours of abnormal and violent social behaviour. It may be thrilling for some and sickening for others.
