Sandton Police Station spokesperson Captain Granville Meyer provided some advice for parents when collecting their children from school.
Tips for parents
- Keep your windows and sunroof closed and doors locked.
- Do not simply hide personal items like wallets or purses as this will not protect them from being taken during a robbery or smash-and-grab.
- If you see suspicious activity, find another spot to park and report your suspicions to school security staff.
- What can the school do to stay safe?
- Work closely with the South African Police Service and School Governing Body and establish a safe school committee
- Implement joint crime prevention programmes
- Report all incidents of crime and violence to the police
- Become involved and join the local community police forum
- Involve the community and the school community in keeping the school free from drugs, alcohol and violence.
Report crime to:
- SAPS Crime Stop 08600 10111 (you do not have to identify yourself)
- If you wish to open a case, please visit your nearest police station.
