Bidding farewell to Sergeant Smit
SANDTON– A tough loss for Sandton Police Station as they lay Sergeant Smit to rest.
It was a sombre Friday for the members of the Sandton Police Station as they lost one of their own. Detective Sergeant Gerrit Smit (52), sadly passed away in Durban while he was competing at the Iron Man competition on 15 February.
Friends, family and colleagues alike gathered at the New Apostolic Church in Sandton on 21 February to pay their last respects to the late member.
Mourners were welcomed by the Detective Commander, Detective Colonel Aubrey Madinginye to pay tribute and celebrate the wonderful life Smit led. He loved detective work and returned to the SAPS in 2016 after he had resigned eight years earlier and was described as diligent, determined, hardworking and, most of all, loyal.

Working as a detective for a number of years in the fraud section at Sandton Police Station, Smit always did his work with dedication and heart. It is a tough loss to bear for the station and the residents of Sandton. Madinginye shared some touching words about the late member. “He has been nothing but a good detective. He was honest and very dedicated to his work.”
André Snyman Eblockwatch founder and Bryanston resident, who was a friend of Smit’s, was deeply saddened by the news. “He was not a man of tin but a man of steel. Rest in peace my friend, I will make sure that all 143 000 eblockwatch members look after your family.”
