Water wasted down Summit Road for over a week

MORNINGSIDE – Water originating from Sandton Police Station steams down Summit Road for more than a week with no accountability in sight.

Morningside residents took to social media to report a steady flow of water, originating from the Sandton Police Station, running down Summit Road on 23 August. One week later, the stream on the side of the pavement river continues to flow.

“Over the last week I and many other people have tweeted, phoned and visited Sandton Police Station and got no response. For six straight days (as of Thursday evening, 22 August) clean, freshwater has been running down Summit Road, straight into the drain,” resident Claire Jackson said.

Two residents were given call log reference numbers from Johannesburg Water. Joburg Water communications officer, Eleanor Mavimbela, said that a team was in fact sent to inspect the situation.

“The teams that came on-site found that it was an internal leak. This would then mean that the customer would have to get a plumber to fix the leak,” Mavimbela said.

However, Captain Granville Meyer, Sandton Police Station corporate communications, revealed no one had come to assess the problem.

Meyer added that the station was, in fact, experiencing problems with the storm water overflow.

Mavimbela then stated that an issue with the storm water drain would require the assistance of the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

Zoleka Jika of JRA marketing and communications confirmed that the agency does deal with storm water drains but not on-premises. “If there was water in the street we would have sent someone,” Jika said.

Meyer said that the station had reported the problem the Gauteng SAPS Provincial Head Office. “We are awaiting the appointment of contractors to fix it,” Meyer added.

Provincial spokesperson, Brigadier Mathapelo Peters, could however neither confirm nor deny that there was, in fact, a process at play. Peters simply stated that whatever Meyer said stood.

The water, however, continues to run down Summit Road at a steady pace for seven days now with no accountability in sight.

“As a resident of Joburg, which currently has water restrictions, and who lives in a country where water is a very scarce resource, seeing how unconcerned and motivated SAPS and Joburg Water have been to sort this out has been deeply disappointing,” Jackson concluded.
