Wondrous women encouraged and uplifted by breakfast arranged by Grade 10 Kingsmead learner
ILLOVO – Women gathered for an inspirational breakfast featuring guest speakers from a variety of sectors at The Hyde.
Grade 10 learner Gallia Fenster of Kingsmead College sought to encourage women and raise funds for her upcoming trip to Morocco by hosting a Wondrous Women’s Breakfast in Illovo on 21 June.
This was Gallia’s second successful breakfast in an effort to raise funds for her journey to Morocco as part of The World Challenge, a global organisation to equip youth to become independent and give back to various communities.
She will spend 15 days doing community engagement and assisting in practical ways to improve education in Morocco. Having raised R15 000 at her previous business breakfast in April, Gallia was pleased to raise an additional R21 500 through the women’s breakfast.
“I’m passionate about women and women empowerment and when looking for sponsorship, I noticed that many businesses are male dominated. Going to a girls’ school and having many supportive women in my life inspired me to host this event,” said Gallia.
She selected three inspiring speakers to ‘treat brains, hearts and souls of women’.
“I hope that people will leave here gaining a strong sense of community and feel independent and equipped to tackle life’s challenges,” added Gallia.
Investigative journalist Pauli van Wyk opened the discussion by challenging women to think over their own prejudices and understand people who are different from them, emphasising the role of social justice in South Africa.
“We need to narrow the inequality gap in South Africa through education… The time for being politically inactive is gone,” said Van Wyk.
Portfolio manager at Nedbank Private Wealth, Roshini Maharaj shared her insights on investment opportunities in South Africa, encouraging women to invest in the South African economy.4
Life coach, entrepreneur, property investor and author Tanya Hafferen discussed her life story with the audience, saying that work-life balance was a myth and arguing that a work-life blend was more realistic and rewarding. She encouraged women to introspect and develop self-care, resilience, connection, communication, affirmation and self-love.
“As women, we need to stop competing and start championing each other,” said Hafferen.
