JMPD launches new breathalyser test

JOBURG – The new breathalyser test will eliminate the need for blood tests.

The City of Johannesburg and the Johannesburg Metro Police Department launched a new breathalyser test at the end of December.

The Evidential Breath Alcotest Machine (Ebat) is able to give a print out of a drivers alcohol level immediately after the test is conducted, therefore eliminating the need for a blood test. Mayor Herman Mashaba said at the launch of the new breathalyser machine that drinking and driving continue to be one of the biggest issues the JMPD faces.

Since the launch of the monthly crime statistics briefings in September, driving while under the influence has continued to be the biggest offence with over 3 500 arrests since the beginning of July last year, not including the December statistics.

Mashaba highlighted that their main goal is to ensure that Johannesburg is a safer city for all and by-law infringements must be punished in order to bring back the rule of law.
