Students from Varsity College Sandton raised R14 000 for the Qhubeka Education Project through their Mr and Miss Varsity College pageant.
The pageant, themed ‘African Pride’, is the biggest annual charity event hosted by the campus. This year Blessing Longhe, a first-year BComm student and Dineo Nathane, a first-year BA student were crowned Mr and Miss Varsity College Sandton.
The money raised from the pageant will go to the Qhubeka Project, which is Varsity College’s national Corporate Social Investment Initiative for this year. Qhubeka is an educational relief programme that raises funds to supply bicycles for children. It is estimated that 12 million of South Africa’s 16 million school-going children walk to and from school and 500 000 of them walk more than fours hours each day to get to and from school. The Qhubeka project aims to ensure a child’s commute time is reduced by up to 75 per cent.

The event was organised and executed by Varsity College Sandton’s social committee. Twenty talented finalists who embody characteristics to be a Varsity College ambassador undergo hours of hard work and rehearsals to be crowned Mr and Miss Varsity College.
Despite the cold winter evening that contestants and audience had to endure, the finalists gave the crowd a worthwhile show, with modelling categories that showcased individual personalities.
Well-known artists like DJ Sliqe, Dbn Gogo, Abby Nurock, Voltrex and Varsity College Sandton’s very own student, Tee Pee Nerd, kept everyone entertained throughout the night.
Khwezi Mchunu, Varsity College Sandton’s PR and events coordinator said, “Thank you to our sponsors Drum Café, XRaymond, Dr Nomonde Mabuya for the amazing entertainment, clothing and prizes. The show would not have been half of what it was, if it had not been for your sponsorships. The event was a spectacle to be remembered for years to come. We are very happy with the funds raised for The Qhubeka Education Project.”
