Educational psychologist, Jo Hamilton aims to raise awareness about how children can prevent bullying.
In 2008 Hamilton developed an assertiveness training programme for children and ran the programme for five years. Following the training programme, Hamilton released a book called, The Ultimate Assertiveness Toolbox for Kids, which aims to equip schoolchildren with tools that are necessary to interact in various environments.

Hamilton said that bullying is prevalent in many schools and educators need to think up creative and relevant strategies to prevent and address bullying.
“I personally do not think that the information provided to learners in life skills (LO) lessons through the CAP curriculum is sufficient to support and empower children to handle bullying situations,” said Hamilton. “Teachers need to be provided with specific training and skills in preventative approaches towards bullying and everyday meanness so that they, in turn, can support and empower learners with valuable life-long skills.”
Hamilton added that in order for schools to prevent bullying they should encourage an environment of active, positive bystanders who speak out against bullying or subtly diffuse a bullying situation as this allows learners to assist one another and makes it difficult for bullies to get away with that behaviour.
With the advancement of technology, cyberbullying has also become more prevalent. Many parents and teachers may not be as up-to-date with technology as children and therefore may not be aware of what takes place on social media.

“I believe it is very important for teachers and parents to frequently be informed as to trends and behaviour of children with technology so that they can educate and empower their children to effectively handle interactions on technology. The knowledge and understanding can be used to assist learners to be effective, safe digital citizens.”
She added that the response to The Ultimate Assertiveness Toolbox for Kids has been wonderful as many children have found the benefit in it. “Teachers have responded very positively and I have done quite a bit of teacher-training at various schools around Johannesburg. It’s been wonderful to hear how different schools have used my assertiveness tools.”
