Women were encouraged to bring along a matric dance dress or accessory to be donated to The Cherry Blossom Project. Law graduate and social entrepreneur Selesho spoke eloquently to inspire and encourage the women present to leave a legacy for their daughters.
“If you understand legacy, you understand that many of the things you fight to see in your lifetime will not immediately change,” said Selesho.
She spoke of planting seeds for the women of the future, quoting Maya Angelo and her ability to inspire generations to come.
The project works with girls in Mamelodi, Atteridgeville and Soshanguve by running workshops to educate and dignify underprivileged girls. “We want to unearth her one dress at a time and restore the dignity and potential of these girls.”
She also shared a poem called She which challenges men to invest in women and see them as valuable.
Managing director of 3M South Africa, Steve Hemmings said, “Events like these are set out to encourage women to set high aspirations and develop through our organisation.”
Women later modelled the dresses they were to donate to the project and created a lively atmosphere at the occasion.
