Major upgrade for Homestead Avenue taxi rank
BRYANSTON – The Big Ben Taxi Rank on the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and Homestead Avenue in Bryanston is currently undergoing a major upgrade by the Joburg Property Company benefiting commuters and taxi drivers.
The Big Ben Taxi Rank at the corner of Bram Fischer Drive and Homestead Avenue in Bryanston is currently undergoing a major upgrade by the Joburg Property Company and will benefit commuters and taxi drivers.
Ward councillor David Potter said the rank was in dire need of maintenance.
“It is becoming a greater used rank servicing the northern side of the ward,” he said. “It is one of two ranks located in Ward 102 and services hotel staff, nurses for the nearby clinic, staff at office parks, shopping centres and a number of domestic workers.”

Potter said the upgrades began about a month ago, but he was unsure when they would be completed. When Sandton Chronicle arrived at the site, contractors were hard at work putting down paving.
Taxi driver Director Ndlovu said, “This upgrade is good. Before, this place wasn’t clean and now it’s coming right. People using the taxis will be happy with the new facilities.”
Upgrades include waterproofing of the office, toilets and change room, carpentry of the doors and door frames, necessary work to the ceilings of the buildings, repair of mangled roof structures, fencing around the property, plumbing and electrical work, painting, brickwork, paving and the upgrade of trading stalls at the rank.

Potter was pleased with the progress so far and was currently investigating the legality of a number of outdoor advertising signs located on the property. He confirmed that the Outdoor Advertising Unit of the City of Johannesburg Development Planning Department and the Johannesburg Property Company were currently investigating the matter.
