New chairman for the chamber of commerce and industry

Charnley was the founder member and executive director of Phambili services, as well as the Black Waste Management Forum of South Africa. He was appointed vice president of the Institute of Waste Management in Southern Africa from 2006 to 2008 and later president of the institute.
Charnley has assisted many small, medium and micro entrepreneurs in Gauteng under the auspices of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa’s entrepreneurial development programme.
The regional committee’s focus this year will be on establishing a stakeholder’s forum to raise awareness among the local business community and the municipal entities, both in Sandton and Alexandra, on the dire state of the region’s infrastructure and enlisting their help as businesses in finding solutions.
“We believe that if we pool our resources and experience, we can find appropriate solutions for the issues affecting our region,” said Charnley.
He said the most pressing issue, and one that requires the most attention is the state of the region’s water supply, which has deteriorated over the last few years. Poor planning and disregard for municipal bylaws have exacerbated the situation, resulting in terrible flooding during the rainy season.
Charnley concluded, “The chamber plays a key role in facilitating partnerships between the public and the private sector to address areas of mutual concern.”
The Sandton region has also initiated a series of business breakfasts to promote collaboration between businesses in the different regions. The first breakfast, north meets south-west, will encourage Sandton-based business executives to meet with entrepreneurs in Soweto. Businesses interested in participating in these events should contact the chairman at the chamber on charmain@jcci.co.za
