Dr Jacques Visser and his team from Oaklands Veterinary Clinic recently saved a dog that was stuck in a manhole near the James and Ethel Gray park.
This after the clinic’s own clients came knocking on their door to notify them about the poor dog’s predicament. The team immediately rushed to the scene and quickly deduced that the dog was four metres below ground inside the manhole.

The male collie cross German shepherd, who is about five years old, was curled up and shivering on a ledge with nowhere to go. Visser climbed into the manhole and comforted the dog for about three minutes before scooping him up under his arm and taking him to safety.
“He never tried to bite me, not once. He is super-friendly and he just wants love,” said Visser.
The team later found that he had tick bite fever. He has been successfully treated but needs a new home. “If somebody can give him a home it would be great. We will [do a home inspection] first, though. He’s so beautiful.”

Visser has been practising for 18 years and is driven by a passion for people and their pets. “Not many dogs go through that kind of trauma and come out the other side, so that makes him very special. He would have died if our clients had not called us.”
