Slides and fun moved to Shandon Way

SANDTON – The movement of play equipment to Shandon Way is officially underway and a new playground for children is being born in Sandton.

Parents and children in the Sandton area can look forward to a new park in Shandon Way, Sandton.

In the Sandton Chronicle article, Salvaging childhood memories, it was explained that play equipment was in the process of being moved from George Lea Park to Shandon Way.

This process is now well underway and the equipment has found a new home.

Kate Wardle, the deputy chairperson of the Parkmore Community Association said, “We are excited that the play equipment has started to move. A number of items are going to Shandon Way and some to the Field and Study. This is a joint effort from City Parks and the association.”

She explained that City Parks have provided the cranes needed for the operation as well as the materials to cement in the play equipment. “Each item weighs over 500 kilograms and is still in great condition. It is nearly 40 years since this equipment was installed in George Lea Park.”

In the adoption letter for Shandon Way from Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, it was explained that City Parks would assist with regards to the relocation of the items, ‘restoration and refurbishing of the play equipment [and] the installation and contribution of park bins’.

Wardle said that all of the rust on the items has been treated and explained that more paint work still needs to be done. She said she is extremely grateful to all of the residents who have contributed, especially Scott Field, of FieldSpace Property Group, who sponsored the project. “Field lives in neighbouring Lower Sandhurst and his children attend school in Parkmore, meaning that he felt strongly that giving back to the local community was key,” explained Wardle. Field, who feels passionate about the project added, “As owners of the Parkmore Square Shopping Centre, a stone’s throw from the park, we seized the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the Parkmore community, providing a unique place for children to play and neighbours to socialise in a clean and secure environment.”

After reading the above-mentioned article on the Sandton Chronicle Facebook page published on 4 July, many residents expressed their views. One man wrote, “Instead of moving equipment why didn’t they just upgrade the park so that people could use it once again as we played there 20 years ago?”

Another resident asked where exactly the new park would be situated. Wardle explained that Shandon Way is in Sandton just off Eleventh Street.
