JOBURG – Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi announced on Twitter that it is his wish to ensure that from 2017, the badge on all school uniforms must have the South African flag.
We asked residents what they think about Lesufi’s plans, how they think they will be affected, if it is a good idea and what the significance of patriotism is. Here is what they had to say:
Puleng Chabane with her nephew Kgato Chabane: I feel the cost of putting flags on blazers is an unnecessary cost. I also believe that Panyaza Lesufi should focus more on serious issues relating to education. Patriotism does not lie in just a flag but is also instilled at home.
Rofiwa Rambane: I am not familiar with the proposal but I believe such a law will do nothing to improve the state and quality of education in our country.
Ismail Omar:I agree with the proposal and if I was still in school, I would be proud to wear the South African flag on my uniform.
Kgosi Mbatha: I believe that the proposal is a good idea, especially being instilled in young people. However, I also see it as a money-making scheme that the government will benefit from.
Rakesh Ishaarlall: I am not familiar with the proposal. I believe it will give schools a sense of identity and encourage pupils to carry themselves with respect in their uniforms.
