Three suspects attempt robbery at Sandton City jewellery store

SANDTON - Three armed suspects attempted to rob a Sandton City jewellery store on 26 April.

According to Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Sandton Police, the suspects tried to get into the jewellery store by overpowering the security guard and taking his panic button.

However they were unsuccessful.

Maphakela said they could not gain entry into the store and fled the scene without having stolen anything.

According to a holding statement issued by Sandton City, “Nelson Mandela Square Centre Management can confirm that on Tuesday, 26 April, an attempted armed robbery took place at one of the retailers in the shopping centre.”

Nomzamo Radebe, MD of JHI Properties said the centre’s security responded to the scene immediately and notified the South African Police Services, who are investigating the incident with the assistance of Centre Management.

“We are pleased to advise that no tenants or customers were harmed during the incident and the centre continues to trade as normal,” Radebe said.

“At this stage, we are unable to quantify the extent of the losses or provide any further information as this may compromise the investigation.”
