Tree block ahead

PARKMORE – Motorists have to watch out for roadblocks, pedestrians and out-of-order-robots on a daily basis. However, the residents of Parkmore also have to keep their eyes peeled for a tree which is partially hanging over the road on the corner of Fifth and Elizabeth avenues.

Kate Wardle, deputy chair of the Parkmore Community Association said the streets of Parkmore were kept clean by a working crew. This crew is headed up by Siphiso Msibi and they are in charge of doing everything from taking down illegal signs and picking up litter. The residents of Parkmore pay for all of the equipment used by these men.

Wardle said it would cost a fortune for the team to cut down the overhanging branches. They would need to hire machinery at the expense of the Parkmore residents. Wardle and the crew planned to remove low, overhanging branches, but only had a small axe at their disposal.

Msibi showed a journalist from the Sandton Chronicle that there were marks on the branches of the tree as a result of cars driving under it.

Wardle said she had tried to contact City Parks for the past few months but nothing had been done. She further explained that the tree was on a piece of land which was not privately owned and, therefore, it was the responsibility of City Parks to remedy the situation.

City Parks spokesperson, Jenny Moodley, said a dedicated street tree team for Region B would investigate this particular complaint and schedule the pruning of the tree in the next 21 days.

It always seems like a great pity to remove an oxygen-giving gift from nature, however, the safety of the motorists who pass down that road, especially at night, is at stake.
