Leadership Unplugged with business leaders in Hyde Park

HYDE PARK – A candid discussion about leadership over dinner was held at Possums on Burnside, in Hyde Park.

Leadership Unplugged is one of the initiatives presented by The Seed SA, an organisation whose purpose is to develop and sustain global communities of socially relevant leaders and mentors. The initiative’s primary aim is to provide close and personal mentorship from accomplished business leaders over dinner.

This Leadership Unplugged session was led by business leader Totsie Memela, CEO of WDB Trust, an investment management enterprise. She talked about the journey to achieve her numerous accomplishments.

She has a long list of achievements behind her name, one of them being that she is a fellow of the International Women’s Forum and she is currently a member of the South African Chapter of the International Women’s Forum.

“The only thing that will take you out of poverty is education,” she said. “I’ve always continued to sharpen my skills with education.”

Memela explained that as much as one can learn, there comes a time when one has to unlearn what they have learned to learn more.

The discussions also encompassed issues relating to leadership development, mentorship and entrepreneurship.

In her journey, Mamela has been faced with a number of fears along the way but soon understood that fear was all about fearing pain.

“That’s when you need to push even harder,” she said. Mamela said the more painful the effort was, that’s when one should know that they were closer to reaching their goal.

“The turning point in my life’s journey was understanding what I was doing and why,” she added.

“Each and every one of us has greatness in us. There will always be obstacles but they are just stepping stones to where you need to be.”
