Boerie rolls for J9
BRYANSTON - In an attempt to raise awareness surrounding motor neuron disease (MND), South Africa’s resident record holder, Andre van Zijl, set out to achieve his 51st Guiness World Record, from 11 February until 14 February, by cooking the most boerewors rolls in four days, at Sloane Park Shopping Centre.
Van Zijl partnered with the J9 foundation, an organisation formed by former Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen to raise awareness of the disease.
Owner of the Sloane Meat Market and sponsor of the quest, Hans Heydra, said Van Zijl’s effort is a way to pay tribute to a great rugby player but, most importantly, to raise awareness surrounding the affliction that physically-crippled Van der Westhuizen.
The 65-year-old Van Zijl, who recently finished setting a Guiness World Record in George by sitting in a tree for four-and-half days, said he would like to see more people active in any cause. He added that he would rather see active people than activists.
“All you need to do is just care. The more you give of yourself, the more the universe will reward you,” said Van Zijl.
“This is an opportunity for people to celebrate a great rugby player. Rather than celebrating great people when they’re gone, we should celebrate them when they’re still with us.”
Van Zijl is hoping to collect between R60 000 and R120 000 for the J9 Foundation and will be at the shopping centre until 14 February. Boerewors rolls will cost R30 each.
