Wastage continues despite national call to save water

SANDTON - Despite a national call to save water after unexpected water cuts in various places in Sandton, gallons of water are still being wasted.

A burst water pipe has led to the creation of a dangerous pool of water on the 5th Street cul-de-sac in Wynberg. “The whole thing is a big mess, there is water spilling everywhere and it has been that way for months now,” said an employee in the area who did not wish to be named.

He said Joburg Water had dug a hole to fix a burst pipe, but nothing was ever fixed.

Onsite, water is still being wasted and is running down the street and into the drains while the pool of water continues to fill up and become larger.

David Sibiya, spokesperson of Joburg Water said, “I was not aware of this, but I have forwarded this matter to the depot responsible for Wynberg.”

Also, water was wasted as it flowed down Peter Place in Bryanston, due to a burst water pipe. The pipe spewed water down the street during the morning of 16 November. Joburg Water spokesperson, Sibiya said the burst water pipe was finally repaired on 19 November.

“The burst pipe was fixed around 12pm,” he said. “The reason for the delay was this burst [occurred] on the inlet to the reservoir, and there was also another burst on the same line, which necessitated that the depot effected an emergency shut down to fix both leaks.”

Meanwhile, water tankers were placed along Melville Road as well as outside St Davids Marist Inanda after unexpected water cuts took place in Inanda and Illovo due to low water levels at the Illovo reservoir.

With the water supply in the City of Johannesburg running dry, Rand Water, the country’s water utility, has urged consumers to use water sparingly from now on.
