Three suspects handed over to Sandton police

GALLO MANOR – Three suspects were handed over to the Sandton police after an ADT security officer spotted them trying to jump over a palisade gate that encloses an area.

Lieutenant Colonel André de Klerk from Sandton police said a criminal case was opened with the police.

According to Theunis Kotzé, ADT general manager for the inland region, a resident informed the ADT security officer that he had seen three suspects jumping over a wall.

He said the officer then immediately informed the ADT central monitoring centre and requested back up. “He then continued to patrol around and he noticed three suspects fitting the description that was given to him,” said Kotzé. “One of the suspects had already climbed over the palisade gate that encloses the area while the two suspects were still trying to climb over the gate.”

Two of the suspects, who had not yet climbed over the gate, stopped and laid down. “The third suspect that was already on the other side of the fence pointed a firearm at the officer,” said Kotzé. He said the officer then pointed his firearm and fired one shot and the suspect fled into the veld.

The back-up officers arrived and the third suspect was later captured.

Kotzé added that investigation revealed that the suspects had entered a premises and attempted to hold up the resident in his garage as he was offloading groceries from his vehicle. “The 70-year-old resident resisted and a struggle ensued,” he explained. “The suspects jumped the wall fleeing the scene.”

Kotzé has advised community members to make sure that their main gates, security gates and doors are locked at all times for their personal safety. “Always carry a panic button for quick access to help in case of emergency,” he added.
