ALEXANDRA - Following the students uprisings at various tertiary institutions in the country over the funding of their varsity education, our reporter took to the streets and asked members of the public for their views on the 'Fees Must Fall' campaign, and this is what they had to say ...
GUGU MAGUDULELA: It's a great thing that students are standing up for themselves. Ministers alone spend millions of rand on bodyguards and cars, and they are also paid a lot of money, which can be used for the education of our children. Education is a right but now [the government] wants to make it a privilege.
Following the student protests at various tertiary institutions over the proposed increase in tuition fees, our reporter took to the streets and asked members of the public for their views on the #FeesMustFall campaign, and this is what they had to say …
SAMANTHA MASUKU: I think the fees must [missing word] to accommodate underprivileged kids whose parents cannot afford the tuition fees.
SIBONGILE KUBHEKA: I think students are unappreciative and seek attention. There are many advantages at universities like free transport such as at UJ, and bursaries. They should just work harder, full stop.
LERATO SEHUME: The government should have initiated a reasonable percentage with the institutions. Yes, fees will eventually go up but the increase being put forward is ridiculous. Fees at Wits are already expensive and this increase just made it worse. Is education only for the rich?
NOMBASA HALA: The fees must fall because some of the parents can’t afford it, and the government must stop misusing money for uncalled for things. They must think about those who don’t have anything. Government should also consider providing everyone with bursaries too.
NTOMBIZODWA KHATHIDE: These students are selfish for the level of education they receive. Everything increases and everything is expensive. Most of these students at varsities have bursaries and then they choose to use their money selfishly.
