The senior debating team, comprising Emma Buckland, Kate Dewey, Jonathan Hart and Isabella Leslie Miller, successfully defended their senior Gauteng Schools Debating Championships title again, which they won last year; while the school’s junior debating team won the junior segment of the championships. Katya Broomberg, Sitara Makanjee, Mandira Padayatchi, Shameera Cassim and Asha de Lanerolle were all part of this junior team.
Nirvana Rogers, marketing officer of Redhill School, said Grade 12 pupil, Dewey, was the captain of the South African team at the World Schools’ Debating Championships in Singapore. “Her team was knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by the eventual winners, Singapore, but, amazingly, Kate ranked first as an individual speaker, making her the number one school debater in the world right now,” explained Rogers.
Grade 11 pupil, Leslie Miller was part of the South African A team which participated in the ARGO Debating Championships in Romania. Rogers said her team went all the way through to the finals and won the tournament. “Another phenomenal achievement,” she added.
Also, Rogers said in the same tournament in Romania, Grade 9 pupil Broomberg was part of the South African junior team and they competed against seniors and performed extremely well to make it to the knock-out stage.
“Katya ranked eighth overall which, as a junior, is quite a superb achievement,” added Rogers.
