Early detection stressed at breast health high tea
SANDTON – "It doesn't matter who you are or which family you come from, cancer can still affect you."

These were the emotional words of Zoleka Mandela, granddaughter of the late Nelson Mandela, who addressed members at cancer event, Hush Puppies Pink Shoe High Tea.
Mandela, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32, was a surprise speaker at the high tea and spoke of her emotional journey to recovery.
Another speaker at the event was Prof. Carol Ann Benn, founder of the Breast Health Foundation, who stressed the importance of early detection.
“I plead with each of you to get regular mammograms no matter your age; don’t think cancer can’t affect you because it really can,” she said.
She also urged those who were present to walk the walk with those affected by the disease, and to open their hearts and wallets by donating towards the work done by the foundation.
Laurence Lotzoff, managing director at shoe brand, Hush Puppies, also gave an address, sharing his emotional journey and explaining how the company became involved with Breast Health Foundation.
“We got involved with the foundation because it was an amazing opportunity to be involved in projects that make a difference in the lives of others,” he said.
“We also looked at how we could impact the lives of others and realised it was through supporting a cause that appealed to everyone, which is breast cancer.”
He also added that the company would be using this month to educate customers on breast health and the work done by the foundation, and would do this through the release of the Chaste Ballet Pink Ribbon and Pink Stud shoes, which are available for purchase at various stores.
A portion of the proceeds will go to the foundation to enable them to continue their work in educating and raising awareness on breast cancer.
Also present at the high tea were celebrities Lillian Dube, event emcee, businesswoman Edith Venter and actress Rosie Motene.
