Messy repairs leave street without water

STRATHAVON – Residents in Strathavon are looking for answers following alleged shoddy construction work done in the suburb recently.

One resident, who wishes to remain anonymous and resides at a complex on the street where the construction took place, has complained about a company reportedly laying cables on Helen Road and how water was disrupted in the process.

“The company digging these trenches and presumably laying cables apparently turned off the water supply to repair the pipe they damaged, but [they] never reconnected the branch water supply to the residential complex in Helen Close,” he said.

The frustrated resident added that this resulted in the water supply being cut off from the area for three days before Joburg Water intervened and switched the water supply back on.

He questioned who was accountable for the situation and the incompetence in restoring the water supply.

“[Also] who will re-instate the system to what it was before the damage to the pipe and valve occurred, and how long will it take before the situation is returned to normal and traffic can once again flow safely at this intersection?” he questioned.

Joburg Water responded to these concerns, with acting manager for marketing and communications, David Sibiya, explaining that the disruption was due to a project in the area.

“The project [was] for water pipe replacement and we are aware of a contractor carrying out work there as the site was handed over to them by us,” he said.

Sibiya concluded by saying that the contractor had reported the damage of the pipe to the entity and would be responsible for repairs on the damaged pipe and any reinstatements.
