The incident took place on 21 August at Waterfall Crescent in Woodmead when, according to Sandton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, officers came across the alleged hijacking in progress during a routine patrol.
“The two suspects were allegedly attempting to hijack the vehicle, but failed when the police caught them during their normal patrol duties in the area,” he said.
The police then searched the suspects and found an unlicensed firearm.
Maphakela confirmed that the two were arrested and detained at Sandton Police Station where they were charged with attempted hijacking and the possession of an unlicensed firearm. He added that the two have since made a second appearance at the Randburg Magistrates’ Court where they were denied bail. The two remain in custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
