The pupils respond to a call for clothes, shoes and blankets for the communities which the school supports, when possible.
According to the girls’ school’s marketer, Jean Macleod, pupils collected items during the week leading up to Mandela Day. The theme at the school for the week was the quote from Nelson Mandela, ‘It is not about us and them, but all of us’.
Pupils decorated a skip with artwork which depicted the hands of hope of those collecting the donated clothes and blankets. The collected goods went to Hearts of Hope and the Strathyre Home.
The week ended with a special service on the school’s Chapel lawn in front of a tree that was planted last year in memory of Nelson Mandela. Richard Wossler led the service.
The Madiba tree was watered to ensure that it grows and pupils were encouraged to remember Nelson Mandela’s philosophy — to serve others in order to make a better life for all. They were also given an address on the great icon by the school’s head of diversity and transformation, Vijay Maharaj.
