Building rubble and garden refuse dumped on side of the road

KELVIN - Impala Road in Kelvin has become a dumping site for building rubble and garden refuse.

This according to Ward 109 deputy branch chairperson, Werner Smit, who said the eastern verge of the road had become an illegal dump site.

“Building rubble by the truckload gets dumped on the verge of this stretch of road, and lately garden refuse has also started to pile up,” he said.

Ward 109 councillor Lillian Kekana, said she had been in talks with the regional director of the area, and the rubble and garden refuse would be removed.

“Linbro Park [dump site] is the official dump site for Sandton and it is ready to be used,” she added.

Kekana said that at the moment, Linbro Park dump site was the only official dump site available for the Sandton area. She also said there had been recent talks of implementing an educational programme for truck drivers operating in the area to make them aware of where to dump legally.

According to Superintendent Ignus Jona of the Metro police, officers can only issue a fine to the culprits if they are caught in the act. Commenting on this Smit said, “Without any bylaw enforcement from the Metro police, this illegal dumping on Impala Road will become an accepted practice because everybody does it.”

Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Metro police, said residents with photos of offenders dumping illegally could submit the evidence to the Metro police for investigation and the offenders could be issued with a fine.
