Yoga works for all
JOBURG - Yoga Stops Traffick is a global yoga event that takes place on a single day in March every year, to raise awareness and help prevent human trafficking and violence against women and children.

The event is organised by Steven Heyman of Yoga Works, a concept which incorporates the idea of taking the classes to various places including parks, schools and studios in and around Joburg.
Originally from Belgium, the foreign international found a home in South Africa in 2006 and it was only after becoming a Vinyasa yoga instructor did he decide to start Yoga Works to use his experience and yoga to help people de-stress and be healthy.
“Yoga initially helped me to stay sane and healthy in a stressful corporate working environment for 12 years and thus, with yoga, I wanted to introduce something that would leave others also just as energised, inspired and motivated as I was,” he said.
Heyman said his intention to bring Yoga to different people led to the idea of organising some sessions at parks, universities (Wits and UJ), in an art gallery (at UJ), in Hillbrow at the Ponte Towers and other various spots.
“These places are usually frequented by people who would normally not make it to a yoga studio or gym, but who still like a good workout. It is because of these classes that I now teach free yoga sessions to kids at a community centre in Hillbrow,” he said.
“Teaching Yoga at these amazing locations adds an extra dimension to the experience of the sessions.”
Heyman says what amazes him the most is seeing people, despite all their differences, coming together in one place and all for Yoga.
It is because of this that he has taken his love for yoga to do good in the community through the Yoga Stops Traffick to be held on 15 March at the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens.
Leading to the event, Heyman will also host his monthly travelling yoga session at the Shine Studios in Braamfontein on 7 March.
